Artist Statement

I explore human emotions and storytelling in my works, drawing inspiration from literature, film, and found photographs from magazines, such as the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Yasujirō Ozu’s “Ikiru,” and magazines published in the ‘90s in Hong Kong that I accidentally discovered in a grocery store in San Francisco’s Chinatown. There is no absolute standard or theme for my sources, but one thing they have in common is that they all touched me deeply, whether of pain or ecstasy, so profoundly that I feel an urge to continue that feeling and create a painting from it.

I intentionally create ambiguities in my paintings, whether by obscuring the space or the identity of the figures. I want to provide an entry point for the viewer to decide what they think the painting is about, but at the same time, by not revealing everything literally, it is up to the viewers to fill in their own interpretations and emotions.

When I was painting back in art school, I liked rosy colors. However, as I saw more of life’s complex and layered aspects, my palette changed. I began to appreciate painters I didn’t like before, such as Francis Bacon and Edvard Munch. I am no longer afraid of confronting and depicting themes that are disturbing, grotesque, and even ugly. It takes courage, but I believe it is a necessity for my works to confront the brutality of truth and life.
